You must follow a few modifications throughout your day to keep your treatment on track. Simple mistakes can add delays to your journey. You don’t have to skip the festivities to avoid complications. Here are 5 tips to help you navigate the holidays while benefiting from Invisalign.

1. Manage New Aligner Discomfort

If you have recently received your aligners, it’s normal for your mouth to be a little tender for a few days. Discomfort is also common when changing to the next set of aligners in your series. You don’t have to feel less than your best during holiday gatherings and events. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever to manage your pain. Choose soft foods that require minimal chewing, like mashed potatoes.

2. Switch Your Aligners On Time

The holidays are a busy time of the year, but don’t forget to switch your aligners every 1-2 weeks as instructed by your dentist. If you’ll be traveling, pack your aligners to maintain your treatment’s timeline.

3. Take Your Aligners Out When Eating

You might find yourself snacking more often. Always remove your aligners when having anything except water. Even a bite or two of a snack or meal can damage your aligners. Never wear them when eating or drinking because it can cause them to lose their transparency. Don’t forget to brush your teeth and rinse your aligners before putting them back in your mouth.

4. Carry Your Storage Case

Whether you’re traveling, shopping, or grabbing a bite to eat, carry your storage case with you. You’ll have a safe place to keep your aligners when you’re not wearing them. You’ll avoid misplacing them and protect them from germs. Remember to clean your storage case regularly.

5. Commit to Brushing and Flossing

Food residue and plaque can get trapped between your teeth and the aligners, increasing your risk of decay, infections, and odors. Commit to brushing your teeth in the morning and at night, as well as after eating. Floss every day to remove any buildup your toothbrush couldn’t reach.

As you get ready for the holidays, maintain your follow-up appointments with your dentist. They’ll monitor your treatment’s progression to ensure everything is moving forward, as anticipated.

About Dr. Benjamin Geller

Dr. Geller earned his dental degree at UC San Francisco and has continued his education in prosthodontics, clear aligners, and general dentistry.
